THE IMPACT OF ONLINE FORUMS ON CIVIC DISCOURSE

Abstract

Online forums have increasingly become vital spaces for civic discourse, influencing how individuals engage with social and political issues. This research investigates the impact of these digital platforms on public dialogue, examining both their potential to foster inclusive discussion and their propensity to amplify division. Through qualitative analysis of prominent online forums, the study explores how users interact, share information, and form communities around civic engagement. Findings reveal that online forums serve as important venues for underrepresented voices, providing a platform for marginalized groups to articulate their perspectives and mobilize support. However, the study also identifies significant challenges, including the spread of misinformation, echo chambers, and hostile interactions that can stifle constructive dialogue. The research highlights the dual role of online forums as both facilitators of civic engagement and sources of polarization. Recommendations are offered to enhance the positive aspects of these platforms, such as implementing moderation strategies and promoting digital literacy among users. By understanding the complexities of online civic discourse, this study aims to contribute to ongoing discussions about the role of digital communication in democratic participation and the cultivation of a more informed and engaged citizenry.
